Resources for LGBTQ+ Survivors of
Hate Crimes and Incidents

Oasis Legal Services, in partnership with Stop The Hate CA, has designed this Resource Guide to assist LGBTQ+ individuals across California who have been affected by hate crimes or hate incidents by providing access to legal & financial resources and support services. This guide provides both statewide resources and local county resources.

Survivors and victims of a hate crime may be able to get money back from the state if the crime caused the victim to spend money on services (medical, legal, etc.) or lose income because they couldn't work. Individuals can apply for this money through the California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB).

  1. Legal and Financial Support:

    • Report crime to law enforcement and get a Victim Advocate who can help explain the legal process and help you apply for financial benefits related to the crime. See county pages for local law enforcement agencies with Victim Advocates.

    • For more information, see our Hate Crime Resources Overview

  2. Supportive Services:

    • Various services are available depending on your area, and can include resources such as emotional support, legal services, emergency shelter, etc.

    • As resources change over time, we recommend using lgbtnearme.org to search for local options if the resources in a county are insufficient or no longer available.
